Output PDF 1.4 for the Easiest Variable Data Printing
We've found it's best to output all variable data PDF files as PDF version 1.4 for the most reliable printing.
Newer PDF versions often create larger files and more complex printer commands. Simpler PDFs are smaller and cause fewer problems on VDP digital presses.
Why it matters
PDF 1.6 includes commands that can confuse older digital presses, which may or may not have updated Adobe RIP software. With PDF 1.4 you get the same output resolution, and everything looks the same. The press simply has less to interpret.
The rule of thumb
Keep it simple and you'll have fewer problems. Set PDF 1.4 as the default in your PSL Page Builder output settings, and only move to a newer version when a specific press or feature requires it.
